Morė doll from last year’s Imbolc — the effigy of a winter spirit. Marzanna (in Polish), Marena (in Russian), Mara (in Ukrainian), Morana (in Czech, Slovene, Croatian and Serbian), Morena (in Slovak and Macedonian) or Mora (in Bulgarian) is a pagan Slavic goddess associated with seasonal rites based on the idea of death and rebirth of nature. The tradition of burning or drowning an effigy of Marzanna to celebrate the end of winter is a folk custom that survives also in the Czech Republic, Poland, and Slovakia. This effigy is most commonly portrayed as an ugly woman, made of old clothes, straw, and wood. The burning of this effigy marks the attempt to win the battle over evil, the end of the dark days of winter, the victory over death, and the welcoming of the spring rebirth.
