Continuing Iceland stories… The eruption of Litli-Hrútur. What do you see fleeing from the lava or maybe making a statement? Loki’s mischief perhaps?
Upon our arrival in Reykjavik this July we noticed the strange cloud rising from the ground that we later learned to be the eruption of Litli-Hrútur. By the time we finished our Ring road trip, the area was finally opened for spectators, but we had no more time left before the flight back to the States.
No activity has been in the Litli-Hrútur crater since August 5 and no lava is running. Nonetheless, the dormant craters and black, uneven lava is a spectacular sight, in the uninhabited valley on the Reykjanes Peninsula.
Loki is often linked to volcanic phenomena because of his association with fire and chaos. In some sagas and mythological stories, volcanic eruptions and other natural disasters are explained by Loki’s mischief or actions. like the great eruption of Mount Hekla in the Laxdæla Saga.
